vSphere Replicator and Storage

Hi Guys,

When we run Test Recovery , in documentation it says storage snapshot will be taken and all HBA scan will be started on all ESXi servers at recovery site.

I did test recovery plan in our LAB it just created new Folder and add vmdk files to this folder. Virtual machine which was started in Test Recovery hard disk

pointed to this new folder.

No scan was run to find new storage and test recovery plan did not create any new snapshot LUN.

Issue post failover using SRM

Hey all,

Firstly apologies for the lack of information or if this has already been asked...

A customer has a Linux vm with two vNICs (Production (192.168.x.x) and Management (10.100.x.x in the Production site and 10.101.x.x in the DR site)). When the vm is failed over SRM has been setup to change the management IP but NOT the production IP.

The hosts file looks like this prior to fail over:

[root@SERVER1 ~]# cat /etc/hosts

127.0.0.1   localhost

::1         localhost

192.168.0.1 SERVER1

10.100.0.1 SERVER1-mgt

and like this after fail over:

[root@SERVER1 ~]# cat /etc/hosts

127.0.0.1   localhost

::1         localhost

192.168.0.1 SERVER1

10.100.0.1 SERVER1-mgt

10.101.0.1 SERVER1

When the VM is in the DR site the customer is reporting problems connecting to the VM/App and if they manually edit the hosts file to remove the 10.100.0.1 entry and add "-mgt" to the 10.101.0.1 entry the connection issues are resolved.

Apologies if this is an obvious mistake that has been made, however is there a way to stop SRM adding the new entry to the hosts file or only editing the entry suffixed with "-mgt"?

Thanks,

James

hello,

I have SRM 5.1, with SRA 2.1 of NetApp. And when I try recovery, stop in step 8 (Change Recovery Site Storage Writable) and show this error: Failed to map the SAN devices on an igroup of ostype vmware. Ensure that device is not mapped to an already existing igroup.

On Site Principal, NetApp 2040 is Fibre Chhanel, and on Site Secundary is mapped by iSCSI

Could you help me?

Thanks!

Unable to configure replication after failover

Hi, excuse me for my English and I will try to translate the error message from my vSphere GUI

I recently implemented SRM 5.1 and try to configure a DR between 2 sites (A, B). Everything seems working fine and I want to try a disaster recovery with migrating a server not really critic.

1. The replication working fine, my server goes to site B and working fine

2. I click reprotect and work again

3. I recover to have my server back to site A

4. Recovered with error... the problem begin

My server running now on site A but I lose my protection. I want to configure again my replication and make sure of my server is not in my SRM configuration but I have an error occured saying of my server cannot be configure because is alreay replicated!?!? I can't see anywhere in SRM where is my server configuration...

Can you help me with that?

Public cloud and VR version (5.0 - 5.1)

Hello,

in a shared recovery site used for Disaster Recovery to the Cloud, deploing SRM 5.1 with vSphere Replication appliance (VRM) 5.1

which versions of SRM and vSphere Replication can I have on the proteted sites?

Can I offer the DR solution both to 5.0and 5.1 vSphere versions? Or customers must upgrade to the same version used in the Cloud?

In other words a vSphere 5.0 ESXi host can use the VR towards a 5.1 ESXi host  (through a 5.1 VR server) ?

Thanks! Mirko

SRM and DR query

Hello,

We are in the process of deciding which replication product for our Disaster Recovery plan to a Site B out on the cloud.

Array based replication is ruled out (for now anyway) as our HP MSA does not support replication.

Veeam, SRM and Zerto are the leading candidates.

Zerto would probably be no 1 choice based on features but it's expensive pricing does not fit in our budget model.

I am reading that snapshot based replication can cause a performance hit and this is veering me away from Veeam.

That leaves SRM, which I know is hypervisor based replication. Can anyone with experience of the product tell me if the hypervisor based rep will also cause a perfromance hit??

Also, on a similar note can anyone point me to a tool or method of capturing my nightly data change rate so that I can start figuring out some realistic RPO's.

Many thanks in advance!

Steve

SRM 5.1.1 in Production

Dear All, I am implementing SRM 5.1.1 into production and I have some doubts/ questions in my mind. I would really appreciate if somebody can clarify these for me... Please?

Site A (Protected):

  1. vCenter 5.1 VM
  2. SSO VM
  3. vCenter DB & SRM DB VM
  4. SRM VM

Site B (Recovery):

  1. vCenter 5.1 VM
  2. SRM VM

Questions:

  1. Should I create another DB and SSO server for vCenter at site B? Or it can use the ones at site A? If it uses SIte A DB and SSO, will SRM work when we do planned DR or during disaster?
  2. Should vCenter be in linked mode or Separate at each site?
  3. If we have 3rd Site (Say Site C) which is also a recovery site. Can we configure SRM in such a way that Site A VMs (Protected Site VMs) and failover to both Recovery Sites? ALso Do I need 3rd vCenter, SSO, DB at 3rd Site?

Many Thanks,

AG

SRA FOR DS8100 SRM 5.X

Hello all.

We are in very urgent situation since the release of SRM 5.0 because there was no SRA for the IBM DS8000 series

Recently VMware announced SRA availability for the DS8000 using microcode ver. 7.0 .

IBM told us that this level of  microcode will never be used in DS8100 & DS83000 storages.

How can we overcome this ?

Can we use this SRA with the latest 6.x microcode, or this is not recommended?

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks in advanced

EMC plugins Required

Hi all!

Have been all over the internet and finding it very difficult to find what plugins are needed to set up array based replication SRM.

Our current set up:

vCenter 5.0 – primary vCenter

vCenter 5.0 – secondary vCenter

SRM01 – SRM server built to work with primary site

SRM02 – SRM server built to work long side secondary site (recovery)

SRM installed and both sites linked

EMC VMAX symmetrix SAN

On the 2 vCenters I have installed

     - EMC VSI Path Management

     - EMC VSI Storage Viewer

     - EMC Recover Point Storage Recplication Adapter

I have downloaded the following plugins and trying to install them on my SRM servers but non of them seem to work:

     - EMC SRDF SRA 5.0 - Comes back with error saying EMC soultions enabler required.

     - I then went to the vmware site and downloaded the only thing under SRM that said enabler which was EMC VNX SRA with enablers

                        - Once downloaded it contained the following:

                                   - EMC Mirrorview Enabler for VNX SRA

                                   - EMC VNX replicator Enabler for VNX SRA

                                   - EMC VNX SRA

                         - I have tried to run them all but they come back saying SRA is not installed

The last plugin I have is EMC VSI SRA. When I try to run this it comes back with error and saying EMC SRDF adapter not detected.

Please can anyone tell me what plugins are required and where do I install them? As in on the SRM server or the vCenter servers

Thanks

Austin.

SRM 4.1 Unable to find any array script

$

Hello

I have 2 servers with SRM 4.1, one is the protected site and the other the recovery site. In both server, I changed the domain account used by SRM to talk with the Vcenter, because the account used during the installation is not longer valid. I followed http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&externalId=1008165

Now I can open SRM in both servers, but when I try to configure the Array managers an error is displayed saying: Unable to find any array script. I do not know if this work in the past, the installation was done by coworker but he left the company.

Any idea how to fix this issue?

Have the array manager a log file to check what is happening?

Which are the best practices to reinstall IBM SRA?

Thanks in advance

Recovery test using SRM 5.1

Hello All,

I have set up SRM using storage replication and both my sites are connected. Now I am ready to do my first recovery test. I have a question. I am sorry if the question is stupid as this is the first time i am doing this.

If i check the recovery steps under recovery plan in srm plugin in vcenter, i can see my protected vms power on priority. If i configure the vm and goto IP settings, I can set the IP address of this VM at protected site as well as recovery site.

Q1) If I do not check customize IP during recovery option, then will the machine automatically get the new IP at the recovery site using dhcp? If yes, the will it get the ip from the correct subnet which it is a part of in vcenter (vlan)?

Q2) If I set the recover ip manually then after the failover when VM is started at the recovery site, what happens to the old DNS entry? The vm will try to make a new dns entry with same hostname but different ip while as the old entry still exists.

Thanks - AG

Unable to deploy the VR appliance (SRM 5.1)

Hi all,

I need some help.

I'm installing SRM 5.1 on a new site with the following specs:

2* ESXi 5.1 Hosts (build 799733) and a 5.1 vCenter (build 880146).

After pairing the sites, I try to deploy the VR appliance from the SRM plugin. the error I get is this:

This OVF package uses features that are not supported.

Line 157: Unsupported section '{http://www.vmware.com/schema/ovf}vServiceDependencySection' (vCenter Extension vService Dependency).

When I looked it up, I found that the "Managed IP Address" and "vCenter Server Name" values (under vcenter settings -> runtime settings) both need to be filled out, but I filled them prior to the attempt to deploy.

so... what can I do?

EMC SRDF adapter

Hi all

I am attempting to install the pluggins for SRM so I can start using SRM and testing it before putting it into production.

Our EMC colleague gave me 3 pluggins to install.

These two had to be installed on the vCentre which was done successfully:

emc-vsi-pm-5.3.0-vmware-vsphere-WINDOWS-x86

emc-vsi-sv-5.3.0-vmware-vsphere-WINDOWS-x86

I was then given this and told to install once the top two where installed:

emc-vsi-sra-5.3.0-vmware-vsphere-WINDOWS-x86

But of course it doesnt work and returns message which is attached.

We had an EMC person which was suppose to assist us with this but this did not happen and due to time constraints I have to continue and try it myself.

Our set up

vCentre 5.0 in primary site

vCentre 5.0 in recovery site

SRM 5.0 installed on own server in primary site

SRM 5.0 installed on own server in recovery site

Both sites are linked through SRM successfully.

EMC symmetrix

I have mapped folders, datacentres in the SRM between sites but I am now at the array replication part.

Any help would be great.

Hope I have covered enough information...

SRM Upgrade

I’m wishing to upgrade from SRM 5.01 to 5.1.1. My VC is
currently 5.01 and will also be going to 5.1.1.

I note from the product interoperability matrix that Vcenter
5.0 will only support SRM 5.0, 5.0.1 & 5.0.2 so somethings going to break
one way or another as if I upgrade VCenter first to 5.1.1 the that only works
with SRM 5.1 & 5.1.1.

So the question is, do I upgrade VC to 5.1.1 first then
upgrade SRM to 5.1 and then be able to upgrade it to 5.1.1 immediately after (SRM
cant go from 5.0.1 straight to 5.1.1 but it can go to 5.1) or do I upgrade SRM
first to 5.1 then upgrade the VCenter? I’m thinking the latter for it means at
no point should SRM have an issue with the installed version of the Vcenter.

Anyone see a flaw with this?

Hello all .

Help is needed.

I have the following environment:  Vcenter 5.1.0.Build 947673   vi client 5.1.0 Build 941893    esxi 5.1.0 Build 799733  &  SRM 5.1.1 Build 1082082.

After deploying VR Appliance and registering it to vcenter, i don't see any appliance object in vi srm plugin under srm local site.

If i try to register the appliance as a VR server i had the following error:

Untitled1.png

But if i try to deploy and register another appliance as vr server it succeeded and i can see only this vr server under the local site

Any help will be appeciated

How to set RPO with IBM v7000 ABR ?

Hi,

Anyone to have some experiance with this enviroment? I need to set RPO with ABR on v7000. I set v7000 to work with SRM, but no RPO defined.

Will changing RPO's (say from 1hr to 15min) cause the Datastores to Initialise a Full sync?

Hi all,

Here is an SRM noob question:

I currently have a VM with 2 disks attached to it (60Gb and a 400Gb) and it's currently replicating every 1hour..

Will changing RPO's (say from 1hr to 15min) cause the Datastores to Initialise a Full sync?

It has Successfully replicated and all... can restore at the DC... however when I change the RPO times and click next and next and next it doesn't tell me it will re-use the existing disks... Should I point to it and have it prompt me to re-use the .vmdks

Any comments will be appreciated.

thank you.

Hi,

Is it possible/supported to use the same (external Oracle rac 11) for as srm the virtual center database, using a different user of course.

Or should I have to create a seperate db for srm?

thanks,

vSphere Replication 5.1.0.1 unable to recovery unavailable VM

Hi,

I have only one vCenter with vSphere Replication 5.1.0.1.

If source VM is unavalibale (disconected host and datastore) I perform recovery of target VM, but task is failed. Recovery is successfully only, if source VM is available.

How can I recover target VM, if source VM is unavailable?

Thanks :-)

IBM V7000 & SRM 5.0 - Failed to create snapshots of replica devices

$

Hi All

I wonder if anyone can help.

We have 2 IBM Storwize V7000's - 1 at the Protected Site and 1 at the Recovery Site.

We have a test Volume that is GlobalMirror 'repliacted' to the DR side - showing 'Consistent Synchronized'.

Within SRM 5.0 - Array Managers I can see that the Volume is found and replicated as expected. Not sure if our replicated Volume needs to be in a Consisteny group tho?

array.JPG

When we run a Recovery Plan it fails at Step 4. and we get this error:-

4. Create Writeable Storage Snapshot

Error - Failed to create snapshots of replica devices.

SRA command 'testFailoverStart' failed. sraError.38295F72-F7D0-4A0F-B8D4-FF9821AB2675.1.desc sraError.38295F72-F7D0-4A0F-B8D4-FF9821AB2675.1.fixHint

We are using the IBM V7000 SRA version 2.x (downloaded from VMware). Our IBM V7000's are Firmware 6.2.0.5.

The SRA is configured with the tick box 'Pre-Configured Env.' ticked. All other settings greyed out (as shown):

sra.JPG

I have set the Advanced Settings option: storage.Commandtimeout to 1800 in 'Sites' as suggested by IBM.

Has anyone out there got their IBM V7000's working with SRM 5.0? If so are we missing a piece of the jigsaw somewhere? Does the DR side (on the V7000) need a FlashCopy Mapping as well?

Thanks in advance.
