How does vSphere Replication REALLY work.

$

I've setup SRM using vSphere replication many times and never had a problem, and typically data replication seems what I would consider normal for app/web servers of a couple hundred meg over a 12 hour time period.  So I'm at at a new client and just stood up a new VMware 5.5 environment with SRM 5.5.  During the last couple of days of testing we are seeing data replication for some servers in the 1-2 GB range over 24 hours, these are for a web and print server that have no real changes.  I've never seen vSphere replication try to move so much data.

With all that said, if a block changes 10 times between replication cycles, does it replicate 10 changes of just the final change?  I would assume the final change but the client is asking and I can't find any definitive information from VMware.

Hi,

We are uaing SRM 5.1 to protect a VM using vSphere replication. now we want to increas the size of one of the vmdk dirve. can we increase the drive size? and if we can not then, can we add another VMDK to that VM?

what is the procedure to protect that additional newly added VMDK?

Thanks

Licensing Error when trying to Configure Protection Group in SRM

Hello,

We have two sites

Site A - 3 ESX hosts 4.1

Vcenter 5.0

SRM 5.1

Site B - 2 ESX hosts 4.1

Vcenter 5.0

SRM 5.1

I have installed the SRA Adapters and Enablers.

I have successfully configured the Array Managers and paired the arrays without trouble.  I also have installed licenses installed @ both Vcenter server.

When I try to configure the protection group - I get an error regarding licensing:

Error Message "There are not enough licenses to perform the operation"

Just can't figure this one out?  How in the heck can I get all this stuff configured and then get stuck with a silly licensing error.. UGH!!

How to monitor SRM 5.1 via SNMP

Hello all.

I have an SRM installation, fully operational. Now, my customer wants to monitor all the activity via SNMP traps. The vSphere farm is configured to send snmp traps at vCenter level, and actually their snmp monitoring tool is receiving traps successfully. But we have the need to "parse" the trap on the snmp monitoring tool to define a bunch of alarms.

The issue is that not all the traps received are in the MIB files. As an example, in the screenshot attached there is a trap that i cannot find on any docs.

Where can i find this trap in the vmware docs?Capture1.PNG??

Thanks.

Access to Production NAS from Test Bubble

When in production, my VM's have access to my NAS filer.  I replicate the filer to my DR site.  When performing a test fail-over in SRM, is there a way to allow the VMs in the test bubble to access the NAS data?

Is there any method how to script cleanup of test recovery plan?

I'm able to "Test" Recovery Plan from script (powercli, wsdl) but i didn't find any method how to cleanup after successful test.

Recovered VM fails in a test bubble because the system clock is incorrect

Hi,

I'm on SRM 5.1.1, ESX 5.1 U1, using VR appliances.  My clock is perfectly sync'ed on my protected VM.  When I run  a 'test' recovery plan with replication in my test bubble network the VM is booting up just fine.  However, all the domain activities (I have 2 domain controllers in the test bubble) like interactive logon, service account startup, group policy, etc, are failing because the time on the VM is 4 hours behind the rest of the environment and Kerberos does not like that.  This is very easy to reproduce.  If a take a VM that was replicated at 9AM and test recovery it it will say it's 5AM every time.

I've set the VMtools setting to 'Synchronize guest time with host' in the VM settings on the protected VM but that does not get replicated over to the recovery VM placeholder.  So I made that time sync change on the placeholder VM but that's not working either.

Has anybody seen this?

Note: I solved this issue while writing this post, see my next post for the answer

Hello Folks,

If we use SRM with storage based replication can we still replicate on per VM basis the feature offered with vSpehere replication?

SRM - clean up after planned migration

This is probably going to sound like a silly question. I'll ask anyway.

Going to test our DR plan. Will recover our VMs to Site B using planned migration option in SRM. Once recovered and all happy recovery has been successful....are there any drawbacks to just running the clean up utility in SRM and then switching the VMs back on at Site A without reprotecting?? I.e. discarding any changes

Or am I better to run reprotect?

Thanks

Steve

SRM Test Recovery AD/DNS vs Failover AD/DNS recovery

$

I read:  http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-11517  and it appears for an actual SRM failover DDNS should handle the failover VMs starting up with a new IP (using SRM IP Customizer) using an AD/DNS server that is always running at recovery site (using AD built-in replication).

Since the bulk of failovers will actually be test failovers on the test network,  how do I get an AD/DNS server in the test failover?   Is it acceptable to replicate AD/DNS via SRM for the purposes of test failovers?   If so,  how would I change the IP on the test failover AD/DNS without issue?  Also,  can I create a test failover that includes the AD/DNS VM and exlcude it from the same Recovery Plan when running in failover mode?

Thanks,

Site Recovery Manager error "Cannot complete customization"

Site Recovery Manager v5.0.2.919478 error: "Cannot complete customization, possibly due to a scripting error or invalid script parameters (Error Code: -1). IP settings may have been partially applied".

This never happened in SRM v5.0.1.63317 -- only since the new version.

Found VMware KB2010581 -- which didn't resolve the issue. I un-installed Symantec Endpoint Protection and the VM still had the same problem.

I disabled IPv6 and the error happens.

The only time I can get a Recovery operation to complete successfully is to disable the IP customization within the VM properties.

This is a huge fail because in the DR site I need to have the IP's changed to the schema over there. Manually enabling the NICs and editing the IP's would suck.

Has anyone encountered this error and successfully fixed? any tips/411 would be great. thanks...

where is the mapping of consistency group with protection group in SRM?

$

i have gone through document http://www.emc.com/collateral/software/technical-documentation/h5582-vmware-site-recovery-manager-with-recoverpoint-implguide.pdf.

It givesthe steps for creating the consistency group or the protection group

But my Basic requirement is 'Where is the mapping of consistency group with protection group?' There might be indirect mapping butthat is what we are looking for.

To elobarate question, how mapping happens between protection group of VCenter SRM and consistency group?

Is there specific file/ data structure is maintained for it? Where we can find it?

Appreciate any kind of help. Thanks

1000v and SRM

We have installed the 1000v at our DR site.

Mapped the networks in the network Mappings on the SRM at our primary site, as so the network resource is that of the 1000v at the DR.

While testing the failover to the DR site the netwok mapping of the VM does not coincide with that of the 1000V but that of the network on the dvswitch.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SRM and diffrent subnets

Hello,

Hope you all doing fine, I was wondering about SRM configuration at the DR Site.

That I have two sites First Production Site and second Recovery Site.

The two sites are connected to each other with a WAN link 146 MB speed.

But my problem is, each site has its own scope and Subnet, So what should I do to let the Two Vcenters and SRM servers in each site to communicate with each other.

Also if I could manage to establish a communication between the Production Vcenter and the Recovery Site Vcenter, when I recover the VMs from the Production to the Recovery Site it will have a different IP subnet than the Recovery site.

I’m really confused.

PS: I’ll use Vsphere replication to replicate the VMs between the two sites.

Please advise.

Best Regards,

Ahmed Salah

SRM error with NetApp array manager 2.1

I keep getting the error SRA command ‘discoverDevices’ failed.

I have mounted the NFS export on the DR esxi host in read only mode. I have my snapmirror relationship working correctly.

I have read something about the SRM server not having the correct permissions for the replicated NFS datastores, what does the SRM windows server have anything to do with the NFS datastores?

SRM service account

Hi All,

I restarted service "VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager Server" on SRM server.

In the SRM DR vmware-dr-9851.log file I see it is using my ID

'SessionManager'] LoginAdmin:  Session '8ac6b' successfully logged in for VC session '520c4' and user 'domain\neotlee'

When I checked service account on windows service "VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager Server", I do not see my ID but it is a generic service account.

Not sure why my ID is listed here ..'SessionManager'] LoginAdmin:  Session '8ac6b' successfully logged in for VC session '520c4' and user 'domain\neotlee'.

Thanks...

SRM Error after DR vCenter Rebuild

$

I lost my DR vCenter this afternoon and had to rebuild it. After rebuild and reinstall of SRM I try to create the connection between the old vcenter at HQ and the new one at DR and get errors that the old vcenter name still exists. I named the new one the same and IP is the same as well. How can pull out the old instance of the vcenter and create a fresh connection?
