SRM 5.0.1 Reprotect Not Working

$

I have my VMware infrastructure in place and working fine. I recently setup SRM 5.0.1 and have my vCenter servers linked. We have 2 EqualLogic arrays. All licensing is in place. Replication is working.

I have one LUN with one VM that I am testing with. I am using array-based replication and I have the SRA installed and configured. I can successfully "Test" a recovery plan and "Recovery" a recovery plan. I cannot "Reprotect" a recovery plan. I have tried making changes to the config on everything I can think of, I have removed and reinstalled a bunch of things but I keep getting the same failed result at the same place (step 1). The error I get is this:

Error - Failed to reverse replication for device  'iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-8a0906-6d36aa101-acf001baf644f75a-carbon-syr-jsmith.1'.  SRA command 'prepareReverseReplication' failed for device  'iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-8a0906-6d36aa101-acf001baf644f75a-carbon-syr-jsmith.1'.  Replicate back task failed or not started Use the Group Manager to check the  failback or replicate back task, remove the failed task

I cannot figure out what is wrong so if anyone can help it would be appreciated. I do not see anything in any logs that I can find. I am stuck and do not know where to look. Replication is enable for both inbound and outbound on both SANs. Not sure what to put up here so let me know what I can post to help.

Thank you.

cannot do a pair operation. The reason is: remote vCenter does not have a registered Site Recovery Manager plug-in

Hi everybody,

Can anyone help me with a problem??

I'm having some trouble pairing our sites in a new deployment using SRM 5.8.

When trying to pair the sites I get the following error message:

Thanks.

VMware SRM 5.8 and EMC RP

Hi Folks,

We have implemented SRM 5.8 along with EMC RP 4.1 (array based replication). While we validating planned migration we are encountering multiple issues as given below.

  ERROR 1:

2.3. Shutdown Priority 3 VMs

Error - Operation timed out: 300 seconds

  ERROR 2:

5. Restore Protected site hosts from standby

Error - The object has already been deleted or has not been completely created

   ERROR 3:

6.1.2. Change Storage to Read-only

Error - Failed to demote source devices. SRA command 'prepareFailover' failed. Failed opening session for user to site mgmt IP. Please see server logs for further details. Failed to demote source devices. SRA command 'prepareFailover' failed. Failed opening session for user to site mgmt IP. Please see server logs for further details.

Error "Failed opening session for user to site mgmt IP", seen even while configuring array manager at SRM. But the same got resolved after enabling 'https' at both SRM SRA. Can anyone please help to understand the issue? I have tried reregistering ESXi nodes to vCenter inventory, reboot ESXi and other infra servers, etc. But no luck.

Thank you!

Hari Narayanan.

SRM 6.0 with RDM

Hi all,

My enviromen:

vCenter 6.0

SRM 6.0

IBM Storewize v7000

When I config SRM I did not config LUN for snapshot.

I have VM with RDM disk. I configured protection group and Recovery plan. When I  start "test recovery plan" I get this

System logs on SRM server:

The VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager Server service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 7 time(s).

As a result service SRM on recovery site was stopped.

If I use VM without RDM I just get error that SRM can not create snapshot.

1)What you think about it?

2)Is it necessary config volume for snapshot on arrays and start test recovery plan before planned migration or it optional.

3)Do you recommend me config snapshot volumes and use test recovery plan after creation recovery plan?

Thanks in advance.

Is it necessary to reinstall vmware tools after a Linux kernel Upgrade

$

Hey Guys,

Normally after a kernel upgrade we don't touch our vmware tools running on the guest VM and everything runs without any issue..

Lately some servers are throwing issues related to "VMware tool Time out" while testing it in SRM (in production everything looks normal).

The issue gets resolved when I  reinstall the vmware tools in production and then test it in SRM (Site Recovery Manager).

I just want to know is it mandatory to reinstall the VMware tools after a Kernel Upgrade?

Duplicate array found while adding additional SE

Hi,

I have SRM 5.8 running in Prod and Dr sites coupled with Prod & DR site vcenter 5.5. There are 150+ protection groups created from four different array.

Now we have set up new solution enabler and want to move all the protection groups to new solution enabler. For that when i add the new solution enabler using "add new array manager" it says that "duplicate array found" which is understandable that existing SE also have visibility to the array.

Now how do i add new solution enabler and give a test run, and then i need to move all the protection groups to use new solution enabler?

Do i need to delete all the protection groups and remove the existing SE and then add new SE, test it and create all groups again?

Can some recovery steps be skipped?

Hi all,

do you know if SRM can be configured in a way that it does not perform some of standard steps of a Recovery Plan? For example during a planned migration SRM issues commands to storage to synchronize replicated datastores, then stops replication, then makes the target devices at the recovery site writable. Is it possible to have these storage-related steps done by another tool and use SRM only for remaining steps? (So SRM would skip the part where it sends commands to storage array and would just resume with restoring of VMs.)

Why I'm asking - we're working on a DR design for a heterogeneous environment (VMs + Unix). It has been requested to group VMs’ and Unix servers’ disks based on applications. This would be done on a storage level with reconfiguration of something called consistency groups. (1 CG will contain disks from various platforms.) As a result we would probably need some central orchestration/management of DR for vmware and unix. The idea was that the central platform agnostic tool would take care of storage - correctly split the replication. make devices R/W - and vmware (SRM) "would be given" ready LUNs on the recovery site and it would somehow continue with recovering of VMs.

I'm not saying I like this idea but I just would like to know if something like that could work.

Thanks!

Recovery testing intervals

I run SRM tests of recovery plans on a weekly basis. I've also run a real recovery and failback for further verification.

I am being asked how often the second type of test should be run, yearly, semi-annual etc.

What do you do and recommend in terms of test frequency?

Should a real recovery be run for testing when Vcenter/SRM is upgraded or is running tests sufficient?

DNS Update on Protected and Recovery Site

Hi,

I have 2 DNS Update scripts one for DR site(B) and Other for Protected site (A) , Once site A fails after VM power On DR Site , Script will run and remove the existing DNS entries A and PTR record , and will add new A & PTR record according to DR Site subnets.  My Question is that now if i have Site A up again , where i can setup the dns script so VM will have old IPs in DNS again. Infact I am looking for Failover and Failback automated with DNS scripts , no manual change in DNS server's A /PTR records

Revert to previous MPIT during Test recovery plan

$

Hi,

I have a simple question:

it is possible to bring a virtual machine to a previous MPIT snapshot during a recovery plan test?

We have an RP with a VM configured with 4 MPIT Snapshot. During test some services were not bring up so we need to test if these services are able to start in a previous MPIT snapshot.

So...if I manually open snapshot manager to the VM powered on after recovery plan test, can I manually revert VM to a previous snapshot without affecting VM? i.e. when I perform a test cleanup I need the VM to be powered off and the synchronization from source site to recovery site must restart normally.

Thank you in advance for any answer.

SharePoint 2010 DR solution using Site Recovery Manager tool.

Hello Team,

I am from SharePoint team. Currently we are working on DR solution for SharePoint 2010 platform which is hosted on VM's and planning to use SRM tool for LUN level replication of the environment from Primary to Secondary Data Centre. Currently the plan is to use SRM for front end and for DB, use the SQL Native Asynchronous DB mirroing. The reason for this approach is considering that SRM could not able to handle DB server replication properly which is an assumption but not sure.

Hence we would like to put forward the following question related to SRM tool usage for DB servers. Please provide a recommendation at the earliest. Thank You!

1) Can we include DB servers as well in the SRM based replication? If yes, how can we take care of "Single Point of failure scenario (SPOC)"?

SPOC: If the database in the Primary DC is corrupted for some reason there are fair chances that the same gets propograted to Secondary DC.

Migrating SRM 5.1 remote site

I didn't find a clear answer in the documentation, so hence a question.

I'm planning a complete new DR site.

Can I install a new clean VC, SRM (5.1.3) etc. and simply break the connection to the old dr site and connect to the new one ?

Will this retain the existing recovery plan ?

It will be using the same SAN replication source with a new SAN target.

I did consider moving the old vCentre host, but renaming it looks to be an issue.

Thanks,

SRM 5.8 Stuck on Reprotect

Here is what we have:

1. What is the Site Reccovery Manager (SRM) version?  5.8.0.8607

2. What is the Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) version (NetApp, Dell, IBM, etc.) and Revision(4.0, 4.1, 5.0, etc)? IBM Systems Storage N Series SRA, 2.1

3. What is the vCenter version? 5.5.0.43769

4. What is the ESX version?  5.5.0 build 1746018

4. How is the host connected (FC,iSCS,IB,SAS) to the array? FC

Within Protection Plan we have 2 Groups. 1st has 2 VM's which house our Post Offices (over 1 Tb data each) on Filer 2

                                                              2nd has 1 VM (80Gb data) on Filer 1.

When running the Re-protect Configure Storage to Reverse Direction Protection Group 2 completes but Group 1 fails with:

"Error: Failed to reverse replication for failed over devices.

SRA command 'prepareReverseReplication' failed. Address of the storage array is not reachable. Storage array might be down or IP address entered might be incorrect. Ensure that the storage array is up and running and the IP address of the storage array is reachable through the command line interface."

I am able to see the Storage array and have Re-Scanned as well.

The SnapMirror is Initialized and updating every 15 minutes for all 3 volumes.

Destination Filer's  snapmirror.conf  shows that the 2 volumes in question are Snap Mirrored.

I have attached a log.

Any help would be appreciated.

SRM DR LUNs are visible to the host but others not

Hi

I have configured SRM with recoverpoint to handle VM failover and its working perfectly, my worry is that the LUNs that are presented to the DR host are visible to the host while others are not.The LUNs that are not visible become visible only during DR or SRM failover without my intervention, I would like to keep it this way to avoid "mistakes" of mounting the DR LUNs. Is there something I am missing in this setup to make sure the LUNs do not appear when scanned but only appear during SRM failover operations?

Kindly need your help

hello guys,

I have a VMware vSphere Essentials Plus Kit. And i want to replicate all the VMs to another host and work as High Availability.

As I can install upto 3 hosts using the existing license, should i purchase Site Recovery Manager license too or else can i just replicate the VMs using VMware vSphere Replication.

Thank You

Understanding SRM Failover network settings

Hi Guys,

We are planning to build fail-over Datacenter.

So you can check the picture for infrastructure

Please help me to figure it out:

Questions:

1. What if OpenVPN-1 fails, but Primary Site is not failing(no physical, not power, everything is fine) just no connection to primary site, How it will connect to recovery site? how Primary site detects that no connection between Primary Site and office so failovers to Recovery site?

2. Do i have to install/Build something in Office which detects no connection to primary site, so it will warns/signals to the Recovery site the come online and put primary site to offline and/or out of service?

Thanks in advance
