SRM & vSphere Replication (version 6.1) - Reprotect

So I've run a recovery plan (single VM for now) without error (planned migration). I have my original VM powered off in my production site and my recovered VM running in my DR site. I'm trying to run a reprotect (using the original VMDKs as seeds). When I run the reprotect action I get the following error:

"Unable to configure replication for virtual machine 'MyVM' because group 'MyVM' cannot be created. Another virtual machine 'MyVM' that has the same instance UUID '5001e2c6-d3e3-16c3-3da3-4e4fcc0e1c62' already exists on protection site 'DRSITE'"

I'm interpreting this as being because the reprotect is attempting to create a placeholder VM back in the production site using the same instance UUID of the VM that is now running in the DR site. However, I already have a (powered off) VM in my production site with this UUID - my original production VM. I'm assuming that if I unregister this VM from vcenter then the problem will be resolved so will confirm this imminently. However, I've not found any documentation of the "planned migration" process that confirms that this step is necessary and expected, so am concerned that my environment is behaving correctly. Can anyone confirm that this behaviour is expected?

Point SRM to new vCenter

Hello everyone, i need to deploy a new vcenter that will be replacing an existing one with SRM installed on it.

My doubts here are:

Can i point the existing SRM installation to a new vCenter?

How can i preserve the certificates from the old SRM in case of need to re-install it?

What is store on the SRM database?

I will wait for your answers.

Thanks you very much.

Regards

Leandro.

SRM upgrade path

Hi,

We currently using SRM 5.5 with vCenter 5.5.

May I know if what is the shortest path upgrade to vCenter 5.5 U3e with SRM 5.8.1?

Since we know vCenter 5.5 U3b would break the SSLv3, so we plan on following upgrade path.  Not sure if work.  Please comment.

vCenter 5.5 > vCenter 5.5U3a

SRM 5.5 > SRM 5.8.1

vCenter 5.5U3a > vCenter 5.5 U3e

ESXi 5.5 U3 (latest patch)

Many thanks

-Wilson

I'm trying to list my Protection Groups which are nested in folders. I can get the parent folder MoRef easily enough:

$srmapi.Protection.ListProtectionGroups()[0].GetParentFolder().MoRef

But how can I get the SrmFolder object from the MoRef? I just need to get the folder name essentially.

VM disks residing in two different array's can be protected by SRM or not?

Scenario 1. Both array's are of one vendor (EMC-EMC)

Scenario 2. Both array's are from different vendor (Netapp-EMC)

Unable to delete protection

Hello

I did fail over from protected site to recovery site. But when I tried to re-protect, it gave me errors related to replays. Since it was test vm, I deleted recovery plan and then trying to remove protection. But I couldn't delete protection group. And now I noticed that there are no vm in that protection group I created. Now I want to create new protection group and perform fail over from recovered site to its original site. But While creating the protection group, it won't detect the lun on which this vm is running. How do I fix this ? Do I need to replicate the LUN again ?

Thanks

Is it mandatory to have vcenter to deploy vsphere replication? I don't need srm in my environment.

Technical Reason of using two different ports number in vsphere replication

for full replication port number in vr is 31031

for changes replications port number is 44046

Why VMware uses two different ports? Why can't this is only single port for both replications? Any technical reason, if yes ...Just want to understand why product is architectured in this manner.

Lets take an example we have shared datastores in recovery site and that datastore is visible to all the esxi hosts of the recovery site and that is datastore is target for vm replication. Now question is how VR in recovery site decides which esxi host nfc will be used for writing the data in to this?
