can vsphere replication be used to replicate vms between 2 Datacenters/Clusters in the same vcenter or does it have to be different vcenter?

Failed to retrieve pairs from Site Recovery Manager Server

I've two vCenters joined to same platform services controller. When I'm logged in using administrator@vsphere.local, there's no issue and I'm able to do everything within Site Recovery Manager.. I've an AD Integrated authentication setup in and my account is a member of Administrators@vsphere.local group. It was a member before installation of SRM as I read in VMware documentations that if it's not a member before, then you need to manually provide permissions.. So It seems my AD domain account has all the rights required but I'm unable to connect to sites when I'm logged in using domain\username.

srm3.PNG

So now I'm logged in with administrator@vsphere.local account and I can see that all the permissions are fine.

In addition to this, I've restarted SRM and Web Client services on both vCenters.. Any help would be much appreciated..

The weird thing is SRM is not even prompting me for credentials which it should be and I do have Client Integration Plugin installed and working in my browser..

Hello,

I have two environments with SRM installed in standard mode: 1 protected site with the vcenter and srm server and one recovery site with with vcenter and srm server. The first environment is based in VMware and SRM 6, the second one is based in VMware 5.5.1 and SRM 5.8. Is it possible to update these existing environments to be able to use "Shared recovery" ? I'm understanding that with this function I could to have N protected sites mapped to a single vCenter./ SRM server My objectif is for example, protect the environment based in VMware 6 and to use the recovery environment based in VMware 5.5. Thank you for your expert advice. KR.

I noticed that some LUNS are detected as 1 LUN.

If we try to select only one LUN, it is detected as a group.

Please see screenshots for verification.

Note:

These is based on array based replication using EMC VMax.

VMs replicated via vSphere Replication on VSAN storage has no issues.

How to get the vCenter details of recovery site of SRM from the post power on script which will be executed on VM?

Hi ALl,

I have below question with respect to VMware SRM.

As part of disaster recovery plan when the virtual machine is powered on at the recovery site.
From the virtual machine, we are planning to get the associated recovery site vCenter name through a script or
program which will be executed in the context of VM itself.
For this we would like to know whether any VMware API is available which give us the vCenter details.

In other words is it possible to get the vCenter details from the virtual machine when it comes alive at the recovery site?
If yes, could you please let us know the method/API which can be used for this purpose?

Thanks in advance for your replies/answers.

New DR setup using SRM

Hi Team,

We are planning to implement SRM for the DR site.

Have few clarifications and need your expert advises

Existing set up

  1. Main Site : ESXi 6 and EMC storage and VM's.
  2. DR site . ESXi hosts, storage and network availability.
  3. DR site Hosts and Storage configuration to be started from beginning.

Requirement

  1. High Level Steps to be configured on both Main Site and DR site.
  2. High Level Steps to configure SRM with EMC for replication of VM's
  3. Can I use different IP address at DR site for the Application and can SRM switch back to default IP when failover to DR  site?
  4. I read in article that Cisco OTV will help the end users to access the application with the same IPs regardless of which site the application is running on. Can this be achieved?

Thanks in advance

How to get the customized IP rules and IP details of the VM from the recovery site with post power on script?

Hi All,

I have below question regarding the SRM IP customization rule.

As we know In SRM we can customize IP settings for virtual machines for the protected site and the recovery site. Customizing the IP properties of a virtual machine overrides the default IP settings when the recovered virtual machine starts at the destination site. During this stage, as an application which is running on virtual machine is it possible to track the IP address change happened to virtual machine at the recovered  site. Does VMware provides any tool/procedure to get the IP change information? In other words can we track this network IP changes through localized script/program (which will be executed as part of post power script on recovered VM) on by using these APIs?

Thanks in advance.

How to detach the harddisk of the VM while executing SRM recovery plan during planned migration and detach harddisk during recovery plan execution

Hi All,

During SRM recovery with planned migration as part of recovery plan when the virtual machine is shutting down,
Is it possible to do any configuration changes to virtaul machine?
In our experiments we are trying to remove the attached hard disk from the virtual machine during shutdown of the VM.
But our request to vCenter to detach the disk is failign with “Operation is not allowed in current state” error .

Is there any way to force the detach request in the SRM context while the VM is shutting down at the protected site?

Also we are planning to remove the attached disk from the VM through script at the recovery site. Does VMware provides
any APIs to do this operation in the context of SRM?

Thanks in advance.

Unable to set up Protect Groups - Error: "Unable to create Protection Group. No VRM Server registered with VCenter for site xyz"

I am trying to set up Protection Group type of "Individual VM's" and I receive this error.  We are using Vcenter 6.0, SRM 6.1, and VR Appliance 6.1.  The sites are paired, the VR service is running, everything appears fine.  I have repeatedly checked NTP and the times on the vcenter server, the ESX hosts and the VM's and all seem to be right.  I have included the logs for analysis.  My current date 12/8/2015 and the time that I attempted the creation of the Protection Group was at 10:36AM so that one can look at that time in the logs.  Thanks for the assistance.  Note, I am using a trial license of SRM now that will expire on 12/27/2015 until I get my order through my procurement system.

SRM 6.1.1 - Question about Single Storage System replicating to Multiple Recovery Storage Systems

$

Hi All,

I am having some issues setting up SRM 6.1.1 in the following scenario. If you could let me know, first off, if this is a limitation and secondly how I can accomplish this it would be excellent.

I have a Protected Site and a Recovery site.

At my protected site I have one storage system - S-A.

This storage system houses 4 different volumes:

v1

v2

v3

v4

On my Recovery Site I have 2 different controllers (with different addresses) -  S-B and S-C

S-B has 3 of the replicated volumes:

v1

v2

v4

S-C has 1 of the replicated volumes:

v3

When I try to make this work in SRM, by creating Single Array Managers at a time, Im hitting some issues.

First, is this possible with one SRM server: to have one protected storage system DR to two different recovery storage systems?

Second, and if so, how can I accomplish this?

Thank you for any assistance

Custom name for placeholder VM's

In a multi-site, linked-mode environment, we have a large number of Vm's and their related placeholder protected VM's.

Is there any way to set a custom naming scheme (or suffix) to these placeholders to visibly separate them from their parent VM's?

For example:

Prime Site
DR Site
UKDCWEB001UKDCWEB001-DR
UKDCWEB002UKDCWEB002-DR

Hello,

We plan to migrate about 100 replicated VMs (RecoverPoint) from VMAX to XtremIO which assume impact all Protection groups and Recovery Plans.

What is the process to modify Protection groups and Recovery Plans? Any way to automate it?

Thank you in advance.

Stale replication GID - page not found when trying to access through Managed Object Browser

Hi,

I'm having an issue setting up replication for a server which has previously been replicated. I'm getting an error:

"Unable to configure replication for virtual machine <server_name> because group <server_name> cannot be created. Another virtual machine <server_name> that has the same instance UUID '501b9832-bb79-d90e-7d32-f7ae5accefba' already exists on protection site <site>"

A google search led me to KB2065033 but I'm having issues getting the resolution to work. When I try to browse to:

https://IP_address_of_primary_VRM_server:8043/mob/?moid=GID-501b9832-bb79-d90e-7d32-f7ae5accefba&vmodl=1

I get a 'page not found' error.

If I remove everything after /mob/ it asks me for a username and password and I can log in but there's no detail and no way (that I know of) to browse to the relevant data.

Anybody got any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

Replicate one datastore, but not whole VM

We have SRM 5.8.1 integrated with an IBM SRA and vSphere 5.5.

We have a linux VM at the protected site with two LUNS attached and mounted to it (say LUN A and B). We have it's failover VM running at the DR site with only one LUN - A. We currently have array based replication occurring on LUN B. I am trying to figure out what type of recovery plan and/or steps to create to failover LUN B and have it presented as a datastore at the DR site. Plus, if doable, attach the LUN to the DR VM? Hopefully this explains enough, but please ask questions if needed. Thanks for any suggestions.

vSphere SRM 6.1.1 API Integration with external Cloud MGMT Portal (CliQR)

$

Dear All,

I have this URGENT need of help on how the SRM API allows connection to the external Cloud MGMT Portal (CMP) such as CliQR from CISCO.

We have an issue with external CMP unable to connect to SRM, even with the appropriate vCenter Certificates export from the vCenter as enlisted in "Site Recovery Manager API Developer’s Guide for VMware Site Recovery Manager 6.1. (attached herewith).

The Goal is to have VM's provisioned by CMP to be protected by SRM if they are deployed on to a particular cluster.

The Objective achieved so far:-

  • We are able to connect from external CMP to vCenter to deploy workloads to respective Clusters in vCenter.
  • We are also able to perform all other relevant activities on a VM as per the options in the CMP.

The Issue: Unable to connect to SRM on port 9007 or 9086 from CliQR CMP to execute the VM protection task. As per the API Documentation

The SRM Web service listens by default on port 9007. It uses SSL to encrypt communications between a client application and the server. The SSL certificate of the target server must reside on the client machine. To access the Web service programmatically, use its URN from a Web services client application, for example: https://<FQDN.hostname.or.IP.Address>:9007

Accessing VMware Site Recovery Manager :    The SRM API provides language‐neutral interfaces to the VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) server management framework. Interfaces are provided for managing protection groups and recovery plans. Both array based replication and vSphere Replication are supported. Location of the API The SRM 6.0 API is located at the following endpoint and uses the 9086 listener port: https://<SrmServerName>:9086/vcdr/extapi/sdk.

The port number changed again for this release. Since SRM 5.8 it increased by one integer. All services use this single network port, and all communications are TLS encrypted. SSL v3 is disabled for security reasons. The API is implemented as an industry‐standard Web service running on SRM Server. The API complies with the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS‐I) Basic Profile 1.0, which includes XML Schema 1.0, SOAP version 1.1, and WSDL version 1.1. For details about WS‐I Basic Profile 1.0, see the http://www.ws‐i.org Web site. You can obtain the WSDL for SRM API by requesting file srm.wsdl from the server root path.  https://<SrmServerName>:9086/srm.wsdl

We are getting SAML Token authentication error while trying to connect.

Points to be Noted:-

  • There is NO Firewall in between the 3 Servers (vCenter, SRM and CMP). They are on the same VLAN.
  • SRM itself is working fine and both Main DC and DR sites are paired.
  • We are able to perform all the activities manually on SRM, (Creation of Protections Group, Recovery Plan, Configure Protection, Remove Protections, Test Recovery, Clean, Actual Recovery, Failover and Failback without any issues.

Looking for your expert advice on this issues as we are running out of relevant options to try and get this working.

Thanks,

-Yug

Hello folks,

I am configuring my first test of SRM (evaluation mode) between two sites (same network).

Everything going great until after I deployed my first vSphere replication VM.  The VM deploys and the Reconfigure the VR Appliance link lights up, but I get an error when clicking on it.

VR1.jpg

I checked the console of the VR VM and unable to login with the root password I had set during the deployment configuration.

Anyone have any suggestions?
