Recovery Plans

Hello,

I'm working with SRM 5.1 using array based replication.  I have a question concerning recovery plans.  We have a very basic setup.  We have a single datastore that is being replicated to our failover site.  There are two vm's on that datastore, say VM1, and VM2.  Is it possible to create 3 Recovery Plans for this scenario:

1. Recovery plan A just for VM1

2. Recovery plan B just for VM2

3. Recovery plan C for both VM1 and VM2.

I thought this was possible in version 4.1, but it seems like the recovery plan for 5.1 has to include all the vm's on the datastore.  I saw the options for leaving a vm powered on or off in a recovery plan, but that setting is then set globally for the vm in all recovery plans.

I realize I'm probably missing something here so any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

IP Address Ping Check after Failover

Hi,

We like the automation capabilities that SRM gives us for DR and it works really well but we would like to try and perform some form of ping test on each of the recovered virtual machines and email the result.  This would save us time when we perform our checks after the recovery.

Does anyone know if there is a way to perform this type of task using Powercli utilising the list of recovered virtual machines rather than having a static list that needs to be manually updated when a new VM is added or removed?

Cheers

Relocate DC using SRM?

Hi Folks,

Currently, my company has 2 datacenters. One in NY and one in MA. A decision has been made to close the MA data center and I have been tasked with getting the virtual environment moved over to the NY DC. While, I'd love just to physically move the ESXI hosts via UPS , the other decision that was made was to add new esxi hosts to the NY dc. We will be upgrading the network link between the two sites.

My first thought and maybe a bad one, was to use Converter and try to V2V from one DC to the other. Now, I'm wondering if maybe SRM can do this? I know it's not the purpose for SRM, so maybe my assumption is far-fetched. If SRM can be used, can it just be with host replication? I'm not sure if array based replication is an option yet.

If I'm missing something and there is an easier way, please enlighten me

Thanks

VM NICs disconnected after failover

Hi,

We've performed a couple of failover tests recently using SRM but noticed that a number of the virtual machines power up but have their network cards disconnected.  This appears to be random, affecting different operating systems and including both e1000 NICs and VMXNet3 NICs.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this would happen and what we can do to rectify it?

Cheers

unable to migrate SRM server to different datastore

Our SRM server is a VM.  I need to move the SRM VM to a different datastore, but when I do a migrate, it lets me pick the datastore, but then I get an error

"this method disabled by 'moref=vm-186"

Do I need to shut the SRM server down to move it?

Recover vm with two different sra's?

Using vsphere & srm 5.0.1

Would it be possible to protect/recover a virtual server using two different sra’s? Scenario would be the OS on a vmfs data store would be protected using IBM SVC SRA. Then a pRDM mapped to the same virtual server would be protected using the IBM DS8K SRA.

I should clarify all the data will be on the same IBM DS8K array, we just need to take away the IBM SVC that is in front of some of the data on pRDM's.

Thank you

Best practices regarding replication of protected site vsphere database to recovery site?

All,

The question at hand is do we failover a production sql server that requires protection through SRM 5.1, but houses the current protected site vsphere database. Will we have issues if the sql server fails over with the vsphere database, as the recovery site has it's own vsphere database? Or does it not matter as the recovery site vm's are registered to a different sql server?

Please let me know if you require any more details, as I will provide whatever is necessary

Jon

SRM Recovery Between 2 different processor family's

I am trying to find out if it's ok to run SRM between 2 different processor family's and different EVC settings between the clusters.

I believe that the systems would potentially require an extra reboot on the recovery site.

While I do not find anything that says this would be an issue but I am just wanting to validate that my beliefs are correct.

Tried to set up swap disk for cluster (to reduce data being replicated for SRM). How can I tell if vms are actually using it?

In an attempt to cut down on amount of data that is being replicated via NetApp snapmirror, I configured the cluster to use a separate swap disk. Then I rebooted one of the vms. But I don't know how to tell if it is actually using the swap disk

Hello all .

Help is needed.

I have the following environment:  Vcenter 5.1.0.Build 947673   vi client 5.1.0 Build 941893    esxi 5.1.0 Build 799733  &  SRM 5.1.1 Build 1082082.

After deploying VR Appliance and registering it to vcenter, i don't see any appliance object in vi srm plugin under srm local site.

If i try to register the appliance as a VR server i had the following error:

Untitled1.png

But if i try to deploy and register another appliance as vr server it succeeded and i can see only this vr server under the local site

Any help will be appeciated

RPO Violated by 1 minute - GetCurrentRpoViolation log entry

Hi,

We are running SRM 5.0.1 which is successfully replicating data to our DR site across a 1Gbps link. Recovery plans work fine and connectivity between the sites is stable, yet we seem to be getting several RPO violation alarms each day. These alarms always state the RPO has violated by 1minute for example:

Stateless event alarm

Alarm Definition:

[Event alarm expression: event.com.vmware.vcHms.rpoViolatedEvent]

Event details:

Virtual machine vSphere Replication RPO is violated by 1 minute(s)

Checking the logs on the remote VR server around the times of the alerts I can see the following entry:

2013-02-28T00:21:56.991Z [F4AE3B70 verbose 'SessionManager'] hbr.replica.Group.GetCurrentRpoViolation: authorized

All VM's have a replication status of 'success'. Is anyone else seeing this? Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Pete.

How to avoid re-install of SRM?

$

Folks,

Those who have done SRM know can occasionally "break" in unpleasant ways. Sometimes it's a simple cleanup but sometimes SRM breaks in ways that force a complete reinstall (ugh!) which is why I'll use snapshots to revert to a clean installation that hasnt yet been configiured. The only issue is that for this strategy to truly work you have to snapshot SRM, Vcenter and the SQL system all at the same time and across both sites. It's not that hard in lab environments but it gets a little trickier in other places where a shared SQL system is being used.

I have one of these environments coming up. The storage vendor doesnt have the most mature SRA and the implementation is using a shared back end database meaning things are probably going to go bump and it's going to be impossible to use snapshots as my safety net. Access is heavily controlled and I won't have the SA password either.

Does anyone know a quick way to clear out the SRM database and revert to a "clean" state using the srm db user id? I don't mind losing my PGs and Recovery Plans but I can't be waiting on the dba because I'm on a tight schedule and the dba isnt local.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

If I extend a disk on the source VM those changes are replicated to the recovery side correct?  I don't have to reconfigure protection or anything?

Site pairing failed in SRM 5.1

Hi,

I have installed Vcenter 5.1 and SRM 5.1 in two Virtual Machines in my Test environment. When I try to pair site using " Configure Connection " button it prompts for Vcenter Server address and then Vcenter Server Username and password, Once I give Vcenter username and password it fails with error " <hostname> took too long to respond "

Also, SRM service also does not start automatically after restart sometimes and sometimes it stops automatically.

I tried to install whole setup from scratch twice ( i.e. Win 2K8 R2 Std 64 bit , Vcenter 5.1 , SRM 5.1 ) on two VMs but no luck !

Did anybody faces similar issue and find any solution to this.

Thanks,

Sumit

Seeding remote site

Hi all

I'm setting up SRM with vSphere Replication at the moment.  I don't want to do the initial replication over the network so I plan to copy all the VMs to a USB drive, take it to the remote site, copy it back, then enable vSphere replication to keep it all up to date.  In theory, this approach seems to be fine although I'm struggling with a couple of practicalities...

1.  Our vCenter is a VM so I'll have to plug the USB drive into my PC and use datastore browser to copy the VMDK files down.  Is there a way I could connect the USB drive directly to one of the ESX hosts and use it to copy the VMDK files to USB rather than doing it over the network?

2.  Is there a way to do this with the VM still powered on?  I tried to do it by taking a snapshot, then copying out the "parent" VMDK but it throws a "Expect put message.  Got: ERROR" so it doesn't like that.  I could power the VMs off to do this but it's going to be a bit of a pain.  Can anyone recommend a better way?

cheers

vSphere Replication - Configuration in Progress...

$

Hi all

I'm running SRM and vSphere Replicationon 5.0.   We have about 45 VMs replicating happily using it.  The other day I wanted to adjust the RPO of a test/UAT server up to 24 hours as we're really not too bothered about the data on it and it kept missing RPOs as it often has backup files dumped on it.  The RPO change appears to have worked as it's now showing a 24 hr RPO on that VM and it's no longer violating RPO.  However... after 2 days the VM still shows as "Configuration in progress" on the vsphere replication status page.

It still seems to be working okay but it bugs me little having this listed on the status.  Anyone got any pointers on resolving this?

cheers

vSphere replication in SRM 5.1

$

I know that vsphere replicaion support reprotect and failback in SRM 5.1.

In our environment, I am using vcenter 5 u1 to manage several esxi 5.0 u1 hosts.

I am planning to deploy SRM. Thinking which version of SRM to install. (SRM 5.0 or SRM 5.1)

If I choose to deploy SRM 5.1, I need to upgrade vCenter 5.1 before installation of SRM 5.1. vCenter 5.1 can support ESXi 5.1 and ESXi 5.0 hosts.

I want to know if I need to use vsphere replication feature in SRM 5.1, do I need to upgrade ESXi 5.0 to ESXi 5.1? Keep to use ESXi 5.0?

Any document mention?
