Place holder create error SRM 8.1.1

Good day,

I have installed vsphere replication 8.1.1 with SRM 8.1.1 and after pairing the two sites and completing replication of indivdual VMs using vsphere replication when i try to add the VMs to a protection group I get the following error" Placeholder Create Error: Unable to find a placeholder datastore for the host/cluster DR Cluster. Any placeholder datastores registered with the SRM server that were deleted and recreated in the vCenter Server will need to be removed and re-added as a new placeholder datastore with the SRM server as well." this is after completing the mappings. I have done the following troubleshooting :

1. removed the placeholder datastores and re added them

2. restarted the vcenter servers at both sites, removed the VM protection and re added the VMs and restarted SRM services

3. restored all placeholder VMs and restarted SRM services

4. recreated the placholder restarted SRM services

But i am still faced with the same error. Any assistance with be helpful. Both SRM and vsphere replication are running on vCenter 6.7

Regards

Kaylin

Switch to recovery site and discards changes

Hi,

We're planning to test our recovery site and we'd like to know if the scenario below is possible with SRM :

- Keep all VMs up and running on primary site

- Shutdown network between primary and recovery site

- Start all Vms on recovery site with SRM

- Make our tests

- Shutdown the VMs on recovery site

- Discard all the changes made on the VMs hosted in the recovery site

- Reestablish network between primary and recovery site

- Reenable sync between SRM on primary and recovery site

Please note that all datastores are hosted on SAN

Thank you for your help.

Cheers,

Some SRM questions before starting

Hello,

i tried to contact sales... but without success...

So i will ask here..

At first - what i want

We have a stretched cluster environment and i want to use SRM for "control" our DR strategy

I think this will work ´.

What i dont know:

I want to configure VCenter HA. So i get an active and passive VCenter.

Is this enough or do SRM need 2 active VCenter ?

Thanks

SRM and vSphere Replication - Reprotect very slow

$

Greetings,

I am doing some work for a customer, trying to optimize their current SRM set up.

Environment is set up in Production and DR, with 4 hour RPO. 10Gbps link with <1ms RTT, unshaped and near 0% packet loss.

During the execution/running of recovery plan/s, the Reprotect step is extremely time consuming.

For a 100GB Test VM, the initial Reprotect takes +-30mins. After failback, the 2nd Reprotect takes +-50mins, all this with no data changes.

This is same for Production VMs.

From all the documentation I have seen, vSR initiates a full sync between the Production and DR and does a checksum of the entire vDisk.

Is there anyway to work around this or speed up the checksum process? I've read that this has been optimised in vSphere Replication 6.0 onwards?

ESX, SRM, vSR are all version 6.0 upwards. vDisk is thin and Datastores are all VMFS.

addDatastores Method

Hi

Would need a little advice after upgraded SRM 6.5.1 to 8.1.1

as I want to use powercli to automatically add the new datastores to storage replicated protectiongroups I face one issue with it.

I can't find the new protectiongroup object (VMware.VimAutomation.Srm.Views.SrmProtectionGroup) method  introduced in 8.1 API - "addDatastores"

I wonder if I have to also upgrade the API somehow as under srmapi connection the api version shows 7.0 or does it come somehow from the BenMeadowcroft module what I'm using?

Powershell script during SRM cleanup

Is there a way to run a powershell script during the SRM cleanup process? SRM v6.5

Here's the situation

We have two production domain controllers at our DR site that are up and running all the time. These are for VPN authentication and DNS for the infrastructure. During a DR test, we shut these down and use clones of these DCs for the test.  This way, anything we do during the DR test isn't going to impact the production DCs. When the DR test is done, we delete the clones and power the production DCs back on.

I have a script that does the DC shutdown, clone, and power on of the clones.  This script is at the beginning of the recovery plan.  It works great.

I'd like to script the deletion of the clones and the power on of the production DCs but, I don't know where to stick it.  Ideally, the cleanup process is where it should go.  I thought about putting a pause at the end of the recovery plan and then the deletion script but, if somebody accidentally answers the prompt, it could bring up the production DCs on the same network as other older restored DCs.

Any help anyone could provide would be ... uh .... helpful.

Can anyone please suggest.

SRM Envrionmental Variables in Scripting.

$

I am having issues running the SRM environment variables such as :

VMware_RecoveryMode and VMware_VC_Host.

I want to know how to apply these to scripts like in a if and else statements.

So if i pass the variable via echo and run it in a step in a recovery plan it works so the script is called testrun :

echo %VMware_RecoveryMode% >> D:\scripts\MES\logs\logfile.log

and so when i add a step in the recovery step to the location of this script like :

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c d:\scripts\MES\Testrun.bat

It runs fine when i run a test as it outputs test in the log fils.

But now when i run this variable in a script with the if and else statements when doing a test recovery it does not work.  So an example of the script is :

If "%VMware_RecoveryMode%==test"

echo %VMware_RecoveryMode% >> D:\scripts\MES\logs\logfile.log

This fails in a recovery plan.   I have tried various combinations of if syntax with quotation marks, brackets, and then commands, but it keeps failing.

Has anyone used these variables in scripts and made it to work, can anyone send a sample of a working script.

Thanks

AD Domain Change for vCenter and SRM?

$

I have a customer in the process of migrating from one AD domain to another.  I've been through the process with vCenter and don't really have an issue there.  This customer has Site Recovery Manager implemented (4.0) with vSphere 4.0 and I'm curious if anyone out there has experience to share with something like this.

I know that changing the IP address of the vCenter and SRM servers is somewhat painful unless you follow the procedures outlined in the admin guide, so I'm trying to minimize the pain, if possible.  I am familiar with page 26 of the SRM admin guide (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/srm_admin_4_1.pdf) ... but it doesn't seem to deal with domain changes specifically.

There's also a KB article here http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1008426

At this point, I'm figuring that I'll 1) have to totally remove and reinstall SRM once I move to the new domain, or 2) simply change the administrative credentials used for authentication.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

SRM 8.1 ABR CG's per Protection Group

$

Can we have multiple Array Based "consistency groups" with a single SRM 8.1 "protection group"?

If so, can those CG's come from different array's?

Assume SDRS and/or SvMotion will still only support moves among resources within a single CG without PG alert or becoming "un-configured"?

Thanks

Is SRM will work without linked mode of PSC from DR site to Prod site?

$

Hi,

We're having a problem installing vcsa on DR site (DR psc is joined to Prod psc). It always get error of "Unable to register ESX Agent Manager as an extension in vCenter Server" (ip range and vlan are the same for both site). Then most of the services of Prod vcsa and psc are unable to start. When we tried to reboot the vcsa and psc, webclient are inaccessible. So we re-install again the vcsa and psc on Prod site.

Now I tried to create their own SSO on psc on each site. Then the installation of vcsa is successful on DR site. So we have Prod site with vcsa and psc own SSO, and DR site vcsa and psc own SSO.

My question is, will SRM+vSphere Replication will work even in not in linked mode of the two PSC with their individual SSO?

Thank You in advance.

SRM 6.5.1 crash down at windows 2012 when starting IP customising at recovery site

Hi All

I have just  installed two vcenter and SRM server of 6.5

The vCenter version is 6.5.0 build 6816672

The SRM version is 6.5.1 build 6014840

All installed on windows server 2012

The version of vCenter and SRM are same for protected and recovery sites

The ESXi of hosts managed by protected site is 5.5 and all VMs on hosts are installed with vmware tool 9.4.11.42879

The ESXi of hosts managed by recovery site is 6.5

I have setup the SRM and recovery plan.

But the SRM of recovery site keeps crashed down when I test the recovery plan

I found if I customized the IP for the VM in the recovery plan, the SRM will crash down just when it started IP customization

If I didn't customized the IP, all went well and test plan success

But I need to customize the IP on the recovery site. And it is very bad with SRM crash down

I have checked the vmware-dr log , but I can't find any panic info in it!!

I retried many times (30 or more). And I found the SRM crash just after this log printed:

Acquired Clone Ticket, Logging into VC (https://vcenterip:443/sdk) via VIX

sometimes it will keep record some logs but I think they are not related.

I seared all the internet and can't find anything can help

So really need your help urgently

Apologize for I can't copy the log out as I can only take SS of them

Thanks!!!!!

Vsphere replication network

Hi I need some help regarding setting up a vmk for my vsphere replication 8.1.  I am currently running ESX 6.5 and trying to add a vmk for my Vsphere replication traffic which would reside on a different vlan.  How can i add multiple vlan through the vmk?  Both of my management and Vmotion is currently using one vlan, which means the gateway can only support that vlan.  If I add a new vmk for vsphere replication traffic, it won't route outside.  Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

Migrate SRM DB from SQL to Embedded

$

Hello

Is it possible or supported to migrate from a SQL Server DB (2012) to the embedded DB and keep data? I found posts about going from embedded to SQL but we want to do the opposite.

Currently running SRM 6.1.2.2

We are planning a migration to SRM 8.1.1 so I understand a workaround might be to do this and then to export config re-install with embeeded and import config but I wondered if there are alternative supported or unsupported options available on our current version.

Thank you

SRM Reprotect step initiate full vm recovery to replication site when using Vsphere Replication

$

We are using Vsphere Replication to replicate VMs to DR site and SRM, When we perform DR drill we experienced Reprotect step initiate a Full vm replication (Initial Replication) to recovery site. As mentioned in Vmware is should be checksum replication. Is there a configuration fault in this case or Can we slove this issue by using Array based replication, If it is possible with Array based replication what is the reason for that (different between array based replication vs vsphere replication on this manner ).

Split single Vcenter into two Vcenters for SRM

$

We have a single Vcenter (6.7U2) that manages two clusters. One cluster is our primary datacenter (Cluster-A),  the other is for our Colocation (Cluster-B). We have a SRM license that was never implemented, but now we want to. As I understand it, SRM works between two Vcenters. If this is so, my thought is to stand up a second Vcenter/Cluster, and join the hosts from the original Vcenter (either Cluster-A or B) to this new Vcenter.

My weak point is, do the datastore "connections" each host have migrate to the new Vcenter? I believe so, but others in my team have their doubts. I'm hoping one of you members may of "been there, done that", and can give me some feedback.
