SRM and Customize IP

$

All,

We have strange issue with SRM 5.1.1. When test recovery plan is executed.

All steps works fine but Customize IP hangs at 0 % and after 10 min it times out with error "Timed out waiting for Customization scripts to complete in 600 seconds".

When we checked logs on guest VM (server 2012) Customization scripts ran successfully and IP was applied on Guest OS.

But NIC card is not connected.

Cleaned up recovery plan.

So we ran test plan again but this time when recovery plan was bringing up VM, we checked to box for NIC card in VM setting 1)Connected and other 2)Connect at power on.

Test recovery worked like charm.

No sure why test recovery plan does not connect NIC card to VM when running test recovery plan ?

Database Requirements for Bidirectional Replication

$

Hi all,

I have two sites - Site A and Site B - for which we want to have bidirectional replication of VMs.

I have two vCenter infrastructures deployed - one in site A that only manages VMware infrastructure in that site, and one in site B that only manages the infrastructure in that particular site.

The questions I have is with respect to the required databases.

- Should the database for the protected site be at the recovery site or should it be located at the protected site?

- If I'm going to be doing bi-directional replication, should I be using two databases - one at either site?

Thanks in advance.

SRM 5.0 Powershell Scripts to Reduce Guest Resources on Failover

Hi.

Looking for some advise/guidance.  We have an active/active datacentre environment.  In the event of a full DR our customers (all internal) are fully aware that their application servers will run at a reduced capcity.  We are hoping to implement into our SRM failover the ability to run a global script (preferrably) that will automatically half the CPU and memory resources assigned to the VM when we fail over and on failback revert to the proper resources.  Such a script would obviously ignore if a VM only had 1 CPU assigned.  We are not powershell experts and were hoping if anyone has a template of such a script or advise if we are looking at this incorrectly and we may need to assign on an invidual basis.

Many Thanks

Graeme

SRM 5.0 license capacity exceeded

I have one way DR and two linked mode vcenters. My assigned srm vm's number at 318 while I am licensed for 250 vm's.

In a recovery scenario would I not be able to recover all 318 vm's at this point? Until I am able to purchase more licenses....

Thx

I have a new setup ,esxi 5.x with 30 VMs in primary site and 25 vms in secondary site .we use hitachi async replication and planning for SRM .

Do we need seperate license for SRM

I have one vcentre server in each site , do we require seperate server for SRM in each site or any vm can be utilized .

what is the best practise for SRM

Use SRM with Veeam for replication

Anybody using Veeam to replicate data from a Prod site to a DR site, then also using SRM to create recovery groups and perform planned migrations?  Is that even possible?

Swap file VMFS best practices for large cluster?

$

I understand the benefits of using a VM swapfile datastore for VMs that will be replicated.   However,  if I have a large cluster (500+ VMs),  is it OK to have all vSphere hosts in the cluster use the same VMFS volume for  500+ swap files?    This is assuming that memory would never be so constrained that the swap files would be used.    If it is OK to do this,  would it be a concern if the VMFS volume was on a host/datastore that didn't support ATS Locking via VAAI?

It would be a good alternative if you could create full memory reservations on VMs to be used by SRM.  However,  it appears that vSphere still creates a 0K .vswp file when using a full memory reservation,  which will still need to be deleted by SRM on failover which will slow the process down.

SRM and SDRS - initial placement only

Hi all,

I am well aware that SRM does not support SDRS as it makes use of svmotion. I was wondering if any of you actually use SRM and datastore clusters but only enable initial placement on the cluster? Is this supported?

Cheers

access to SRM statistics

I've been tasked with constructing a dashboard to show that SRM is 'working', in a semi-realtime way, in addition to alerting when something goes wrong.  I know that there are alerting capabilities for certain events like remote site down, etc., and have some of those configured. I'm being asked to show things like what srm is replicating to a remote site, and when it last did so. I've been looking for a way to get this info programatically, but can't seem to find anything like that so far. Digging thru the documentation on the perl API and powercli. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

SRM Failover Failed with RecoveryPoint

Hi Folks,

we have setup SRM with RecoveryPoint array. We had no issues with any configuration. But when we validated failover we get the following error at recovery steps.

Error - Failed to sync data on replica consistency group '****'. Replication is not active for some reason in group copy.

I have attached the recovery plan history report for reference. Can anyone knows what could cause this issue?

FYI. In RP consistency group policy we set 'SRM' and Managed by "External Application" (this is what our storage team done though I had no clue what this means). Also I don't know if this is what causing the issue.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,

Hari.

Netapp SRA 2.01 Network Firewall Ports

Our network guru's have decided to put firewalls around everything they can find, and now our NetApp SRA plug-in can no longer talk to the NetApp controllers.

Can someone please point me in the right direction as to the firewall ports we require - is it just TCP 22/SSH?

This is the last component in our Virtual infrastructure that is 'not' working - its been a fun few weeks!

Thanks in advance.

Test - DR setup

Hi,

We want to test our existing Site Recovery Manager setup. In short we want to test if everything works if some diaster happens.

We have thought of following these steps. Please suggest if these steps are fine or do we need to add anything else.

1)      Create the new protection Group “DR Test”

2)      Enable the Replication for the VM’s which is Created for DR Test on “DR Test” protection group.

3)      Create the Recovery plan for protection Group “DR Test”

4)      Do the DHCP reservation for the VM’s on Recovery Site ( “VMNAME-SRM”)

5)      Run the DR Test  “Test” and “Clean UP” the Test

6)      Got success in Test mode without any errors then run the “Recovery plan” and monitor the status

7)      Got success then run the “Reprotect” which will revert from protected site to Production Site.

SRM in a cluster with active VM's

$

Can I have SRM set up so that the standby/DR VM's are in a cluster that has active virtual machines in it? My DR site is another building 35 miles away that has active servers. Do I need to have a separate cluster for SRM that doesn't have any active VM's or can I just have it on the same cluster (assuming it has the capacity)?

Post Power On Script Question

In my vSphere 5 U2 environment I am running SRM 5.02 with SAN replication.

My question is about post power on scripting.  Since my VM's have to have their IP Addresses changed, I find that I need to manually log in to some systems and run an ipconfig /registerdns.

I was wondering if I can just put that in as a post power on script by simply putting in ipconfig /registerdns right in the the "Content" field of the post power on step.

Thanks.

Uninstalled SRM. vCenter Service Status displaying VR Management Error

$

Hi,

I was trialing SRM and have uninstalled it.

I uninstalled SRM and also deleted the replication appliance I deployed from it.

Now there is an alert in vCenter Service Status that VR Management is Unable to retrieve health data from https://ipaddress:5480/service/hms/cgi/health.py

I did some research for the error and found people taking about this error and how to resolve if SRM is still present by updating the thumbprint.

I followed the steps in this VMware Blog to locate the entry in the vCenter Server LDAP.

If I no longer have SRM installed, can I remove the entry "CN=com.vmware.vcHms,…" all together? Or is this needed for other things?

What cleanup steps should I follow to remove all remnants of SRM?

Thanks,

Trent
