SRM-Recovery Plans Export/Import - 8.1.2

Hi All,

Looking to migrate from one instance of SRM to another. i.e. vCenter 6.0 to new vCenter 6.7. Trying to understand if there is a way that can we export the SRM configuration from vCenter 6.0 and import the SRM configuration in vCenter 6.7 ? In case, if not possible then what are option for SRM migration to new vCenter ? Also, do we need to configure SRM from the scratch or any automation power cli script will able to perform this task ? Thanks for any input as I am fairly new to SRM.

Thanks

raj

Deploy SRM Appliance using OVFTool

I've seen some articles and documentation on how to deploy the Site Recovery Manager appliance using the ovftool, but they've been very basic.  I was hoping there was a way to customize the deployment even further .... such as setting an IP address, mask, gateway, etc.

From the SRM 8.3 Installation Manual:

ovftool
--acceptAllEulas
--ipAllocationPolicy=dhcpPolicy --ipProtocol=IPv4
--deploymentOption=light | standard
--name=SRM-VA-NAME
--datastore=DATASTORE-NAME
--network=NETWORK-NAME
--net:"Network 1"=NETWORK-NAME
--prop:varoot-password=ROOT-PASSWORD
--prop:vaadmin-password=ADMIN-PASSWORD
--prop:dbpassword=DB-PASSWORD
--prop:ntpserver=NTP-SERVER
http://HOST/PATH/srm-va_OVF10.ovf vi://VC_USERNAME:VC_PASSWORD@VC_ADDRESS/DATACENTER-NAME/host/CLUSTER-NAME/Resources/RESOURCE-

POOL-NAME

I've opened up the srm-va_OVF10.ovf file itself to try and pick it apart, but not having any luck.  Is it possible to add additional prop values?

Thanks in advance for your help!

SRM Re-protection

We have 40 VMs on our protected site, we are planning to fail-over all of them to DR site in a planned maintenance window. The question is we'd like to re-protect them and fail back to our PR site. Anyone has any idea how long SRM will take to re protect all VMs?

TIA.

Multiple NICs / Multiple Default Gateways

I have a few VMs that have dual NICs (say NIC1 and NIC2).  Initially, in Windows, I'm only assigning a default gateway to NIC1.

In my IP Customizations (under Network Mapping) I have it setup to NOT assign a gateway to NIC2.  I left it blank.

However, after a test or failover, it still ends up assigning a gateway to NIC2.  And, because of this, Windows and my application get confused on which NIC to egress.

My current workaround is to assign NIC2 a higher metric.

Has anyone else seen this problem?  This a bug or how it's intended to work?

Thanks in advance for your help!

DR Test Strategy Question

My boss has indicated that he wants to run a full DR test. He has also indicated that while he wants all production servers brought up in the recovery site, none of the changes made during testing will need to be replicated back to the original site. I don't have a ton of experience with SRM. So my questions is, rather than going through the potential headaches of a planned migration to the recovery site and a fail back to the original protected site, can my DR test be accomplished with just a test of my recovery plan? Here is what I am thinking

- Execute a test of the recovery plan

- At the protected site, manually power off all protected VMs

- At the recovery site, manually configure the settings on the protected VMs and place them in the appropriate DR network

- Do our testing

- When testing is complete, move all the protected VMs back to the isolated network created during the test

- Run a cleanup on the recovery plan

- Power everything back on in the original protected site

At this point, is it like nothing ever happened? Am I off base or over-simplifying things? We are running SRM version 8.2 with Vsphere replication. Vcenter is on version 6.7 at both sites and they are in linked mode. The hosts in the protected site are on ESXi version 6.7, and the hosts at the recovery site are 6.0.

SRM Planned Migration Fail Back Reprotect Fails

Hi Everyone, I have a SRM 8.1 infrastructure I have been testing the fail over and fail back from Site A to Site B, being Site B my recovery site.

The problem is that sometimes the DRP using the Planned migration runs correct and some times it send me an error message when reprotecting from Site B to Site A: "Operation Failed, VR Synchronization failed for VRM group STMXPTHBD010. Synchronization monitoring has stopped. Please verify replication traffic connectivity between the source hosts anthem target...." I keep thinking that this may be a network problem but when monitoring the network during the DRP execution nothing seems incorrect. Any ideas?

Storage policies (array-based replication) Protection Group - license required

Hello!

For context we currently have SRM standard licenses.

When attempting to create a protection group of type 'Storage policies (array-based replication)' the operation fails with the error message 'There are not enough licenses installed to perform the operation.'

Am I correct in saying that an SRM enterprise license is required for storage policy-based management and stretched storage support?

SRM -8.x(Appliance version - DNS Auto Update Queries in recovery Plan

Hi Team,

I have to perform the recovery of the protected VM using vsphere replication.

We would like to know the procedure and the script to auto update the DNS post recovery in DR site for both windows and Linux virtual machines.

Thanks

Can I use SRM array-based replication between different hardware vendors?

Hi All

I am in the process of considering migration strategies for a client between a vBlock SAN and a Cisco Hyperflex cluster. There are a number of options available, one of which is to use SRM which is currently licensed and used by the client between vBlocks.

I have read through some documentation but cant find anything explicit that confirms or otherwise whether array based replication can be used rather than vSphere based replication. The RPO threshold on the latter seems to be 15 minutes (compared to 5 mins when just using vSphere replication directly apparently) which is pretty high in the cirumstances.

The storage is VMFS on the vBlock and will be NFS on the HX. While I would normally say this isnt possible, I did see one graphic which said it was so just wanted to gain some clarity from others before proceeding.

Thanks in advance.

No storage replication adapters installed.

Hi,

i had setup an environment with evaluation licenses. vSphere 6.7 with SRM 8.2. A few weeks later, i added licenses and wanted to continue testing SRM, but it gave an error on the Storage Replication Adapters. On one site it says: No storage replication adapters installed.

I already removed the SRA adapter on the appliance and added it again. In the SRM appliance management i can see the SRA but when i go to the Site Recovery, it does not have a adapter? One site does have the adapter now, but the second doesn't according to the site recovery interface (although the driver has been loaded in the appliance management).

Before the evaluation was over a few weeks ago, the SRA was available. I dit not check the SRA status before licensing, but it is a problem now. I already rebooted the appliances (SRM & VC) but still the SRA is unavailable. The other site has no issues with this....

I would appreciate any help finding the solution.

Thanks in advance.

Can VM participate in more than one Recovery plan

Hello,

Can a single VM be a part of two or more recovery plans?

For example i want a VM to be in a recovery plan that is for one platform and at the same time be a part of a recovery plan that is for the whole data center. That way i could recover the platform only and not be forced to flip all platforms in a data center.

thanks!

unprotecting the VM from SRM and adding the VM to protection group

Hi All,

We have a requirement for migrating the VM and host from old vCenter which is un unsupported version currently to newer vCenter 6.7. It's taking the manual effort for removing the VM's from the protection group and after migrating the VM and Host to the new vcenter, again we need to add the VM's to the same protection group. Just want to know from expert, if its possible to automate these tasks from power cli ? Kindly help.

Note :- We have a specific lists of VM's in the protection group and need to remove the VM's from the protection group and add the vm back to the protection group in new vCenter. Protection group name will remain same. SRM version 8.1

Thanks

SRM 8.2 virtual appliance wont take certificate.

vmware support was troubleshooting a vsphere replication issue and on my SRM HQ site they changed the virtual appliance to have a self signed certificate.  Now vcenter doesn't trust SRM and there are all kinds of errors in the pariing between SRMHQ and SRMDR.

I'm trying to get the certificate back on so I generated a CSR and submitted it to our Windows CA.  I tried both DER and base 64 formats, but I just get a pop up error.  Any idea how to get a cert loaded?

Site Recovery Manager across ESXI Versions

Hi guys, please lend me a hand. This is my sad history

I have two sites, Production and Remote.

Each site have esxi hosts (6.0), one vcenter per site (6.0), one site recovery manager per site (8.2.0).

Production hosts are dell M620, with VMware 6.5 support.

Remote hosts are dell m610, with VMware 6.0 support (not supported for Vware 6.0).

Question

Can i upgrade Production esxi hosts to VMware 6.5 and Production VCenter to Vmware 6,5, but keep Remote hosts in VMware 6.0 and Remote VCenter in 6.0?

I want to keep Site Recovery Manager funcionality but i need upgrade Production esxi hosts because security issues.

Thank guys

Backup VM replicated with vSphere Replication/SRM

Hi,

I have an environment where I use vSphere Replication / SRM to replicate VMs from host A to host B.

I want to back up the VMs that are on my host B.

Can I do agentless backup using a backup solution for replicated VMs? Are there any restrictions on the VMware side?

Thank you.
